Kate Shannon, MIACP

Counsellor & Psychotherapist

"There is a crack in everything and that is how the light gets in"

   - Leonard Cohen

I am a fully accredited psychotherapist who believes that getting to the route of any issue which causes suffering and pain often means looking at whats happened to you and understanding how it's affecting you now. I believe that a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship plays a key role in healing, learning and growing. At the centre of every human being, there is only good, and this is a core belief of mine which I value.

My Approach

My approach is humanistic and integrative, primarily person centered, always tailoring to the needs of the client. When a person comes in to counselling, they are often looking to be seen, heard, and understood, often through fresh eyes. This approach appreciates that each person is individual and has the ability to yield their own power to provoke change within themselves.

I always aim to provide a supportive and non judgemental space where the client feels safe to explore what brings them to therapy.

I facilitate the integration of modalities such as attachment theory and relational science, with an interest in mindful self-compassion. I am understanding that we all are made up of many parts, all needing compassion, and this a core way of working with clients.

Issues and Areas of Interest

I have worked with a variety of different issues including but not limited to anger, anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, chronic pain, trauma and abuse, grief and loss, miscarriage, abortion and TFMR, gender & sexual diversity, suicidality and self harm, and life transitions.

I have a particular interest in working with anxiety and identity issues in younger adulthood, facilitating meaningful changes and building resilience with a focus on self-acceptance and compassion.

Additionally, I am passionate about maternal mental health and I focus my approach around awareness of the impact of social, cultural and systemic factors on maternal wellbeing, using trauma-informed and feminist perspectives.
